Although Bangkok taxis are cheap and plentiful, a good way of getting around
Bangkok is on a Micro Bus. These small buses are air-conditioned and don't
allow standing inside.
The routes actually pass through all the best districts, and if you have
some time to spare in the day, this is a good way to explore Bangkok on
your own for next to nothing.A flat rate of
20 Baht * will take you as far as you want to go,
pay on entry, with the right money.
You put your 20 Baht in a receptacle by the driver, get your ticket from
the printer*, keep the ticket safe as they do have ticket inspectors.
* for some reason the location of the ticket printer varies from bus
to bus, some are on the right above the window, and some are on the
centre console. It is acceptable to stagger in with your shopping, find
a seat, then come back and pay in a few minutes.

(Kasama) and Miss Jane of the Triumph Bra
Company, Bangkok, for compiling the
list and translating it into English for me.
* The
Fare seems to be a bit variable, it was 40 Baht, then 30, and now 20,
but it may well go back up to 30 Baht.

Sadly, the Bangkok
Microbus is a shadow of its former self. When they were
introduced there used to be a female "Bus Ambassador" to
show you to your seat and give you that morning's newspaper
to read as you watched the TV with travel suggestions, pop
music clips, and news in both Thai and English. There were
also a selection of magazines as well as a telephone, but
this was back in the early 1990's when mobile phones were
prohibitively expensive in Thailand. Look at the bus now,
and try to imagine them when they were all shiny and new. |
