Some of the vast amount of Indian Restaurants in
Bangkok |
Being British, well English
really, there is nothing better, after a long night of drinking beer,
than the national dish of my country, Chicken Tikka Masala!
Here are a few places that serve proper
Indian food, not the pale imitation stuff that seems to be a cross
between Pakistani and Middle Eastern rubbish that so many so-called
Indian restaurants here in Bangkok, serve.
|

Rang
Mahal
Rembrandt Hotel Sukhumvit Soi 18, 26th Floor
This is the best Indian
Restaurant in Bangkok and winner of the 2000 Dining Awards as well as
numerous others.
A bit
expensive but fine food in luxurious surroundings with brilliant
panoramic views out over the city.
Try their enormous nan bread, serves
8! The best day to go is for the Sunday lunch buffet, get there early
before all the Indian tailors turn up with their horrible children
though, I am usually in and out before 1pm if I go, this seems to be
about right.
The vast buffet
includes juices etc. so there is no additional charge unless you want a
few bottles of genuine Kingfisher beer.
4 people can eat for 1900 Baht
including tax etc. so it's very economical on a Sunday.

Indian
Hut
311/2-5 Suriwong Road (New Road end) Opposite
Manohra Hotel
Recently expanded onto the
ground floor, I have had very good Indian food here for a modest price.
Large portions too. Specialises in Northern Indian food.
Runner-up in
the dining awards several times, as well as the winners in 2005, so I'm not the only one recommending this restaurant.
As it's not in a hotel, it's far more reasonably priced, a good
all-round choice for Indian food you will recognise from visits to UK
restaurants.
Best choice for all round taste,
quality, & value. The only problem is it's a bit off the "beaten track",
and best visited by taxi. Tell them you want to go to the Manohra Hotel,
and you can't miss it.

RED Contemporary Indian
Dining Soi 9 Tonglor (Sukhumvit 55)
Tong Lo
Skytrain Station
New on the scene in 2007, the
humour of the name was at first lost on me (Red Indian!) but it may
be unintentional.
Located a short walk up Soi Tonglor on the left hand side, and
easily found on foot from the Skytrain.
Visit the
RED Website
for a detailed map and to see the menu etc.

Mrs.Balbir's
Soi 11/1 Sukhumvit
Inexpensive and tasty food
from this long established restaurant that has not changed in the past
15 years. Located up the small Soi just past Soi 11, by the Business
Inn. Buffet lunch and a la carte in the evenings up to about 10pm only,
it always seems to close early. Mrs. Balbir is often seen here, check out the press cuttings on the
walls, former caterer to the rich and famous and Star TV broadcaster.
Also occasional Indian cookery classes
where you end up eating everything! Definitely worth a visit, especially
as it is in staggering distance of Cheap Charlie's bar on the wall
on the opposite side of Soi 11! Both, 'not to be missed' institutions in
Bangkok. Long-term supporter of
The Ploenchit Fair, look for Mrs Balbir's Indian food at this annual
charity event normally held on the last Saturday in November.

Hazara
29 Soi 38 Sukhumvit
Tong Lo
Skytrain Station
This is a very interesting place,
within a genuine Thai teak house, but still easy to find and in the
heart of the city. Great photo opportunity, so take a camera.
It is a
short way into Sukhumvit 38 which is right at Tong Lor Skytrain
station, so no taxi required.
The complex also houses a pastry
shop and cafe VISAGE, The
FACE BAR, and LA
NA THAI Thai restaurant.

Indus
71, Sukhumvit Soi 26
Phrom Phong
Skytrain Station
Occupying the building that was once
The Whole Earth restaurant, you will now find Indus.
Smartly decorated and with a good menu. It's a bit of a trek down
Sukhumvit 26 from either end, but worth it.
Draft Paulaner beer served, goes nicely with spicy food!
Bangkok Dining &
Entertainment Magazine Award for Best Indian Restaurant in Thailand
for 2006.
Good detail on their website

Passand
214, Sukhumvit Soi 12
Find Passand on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 12,
just by the footbridge. Cheap and
cheerful, good sized portions.
A bit sparse on the decor, but the food
is quite good. Free delivery service
within 2 KM if your order is at least 300 Baht.
|
Tandoor
Inside Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Silom Road
A bit expensive as it's in
a hotel, but a wide selection of good genuine Indian dishes, just as you
would expect to get back home in the UK!
Take the lift to the sixth
floor from the lobby. Buffet lunch on a Sunday, as with the Rang Mahal,
get there as close to 12 noon as you can, to avoid the Indian tailors
and their unruly kids who seem to turn up at more like 1pm!
|

Bukharah's
Sukhumvit Road near Soi 7
Recommended by an Indian
friend, I tested this restaurant and you should not be disappointed.
Slightly more expensive than it should be, but probably due to the location on the main street.
Try and get a seat on the ground floor as service upstairs is a bit
sporadic.
|

Bawarchi (formerly
Haveli & Copper Chimney)
Meridien President Grand Hotel basement
Well decorated and a bit more expensive than others, although slightly
cheaper than the Rang Mahal.
Due to its location in a 5 star hotel
complex, the prices reflect the rent for the restaurant space. There are
alternatives, but if the cost is not a problem then it's worth a try as
it's highly regarded amongst the Indian community.
Their sign says Fine
Indian & Zen Indian Chinese Cuisine, whatever that is.
Tried and tested, good food, well presented
but the bill was loaded by me drinking 2 Kingfisher beers and getting
charged 195 Baht++ for each bottle!, well out of order, and more than double
the price of Kingfisher elsewhere.

Bawarchi Near Entrance No.6
Suan-Lum Night Bazaar (Lumpinee Night Bazaar)
Rama IV (4) Road/Wireless Road
Opened in 2003, this is quite a large
restaurant, but a bit on the quiet side when I visited, especially for a
Saturday night. Standard dishes on the menu, very quick service from
friendly attentive staff. My food was well cooked and tasty. Not too
expensive, Chicken Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi, Rice and a plain nan with 2
cans of ginger beer was Baht 430.
This is not too easy to find, even less
so if you look at the map on their business card! If you
are visiting the Night Bazaar, it's well worth a visit.
|

Indian Garden Sukhumvit Soi 8
Nana
Skytrain Station
Several people have told me
about this restaurant, although I haven't got round to visiting it
yet, check out their economical menu
HERE
Easy to find from Nana Skytrain
station on Sukhumvit Road.

India Today
On the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 8
Nana
Skytrain Station
Opened late 2006 above a tailoring
shop, very prominent location, and modern clean decor.
There is a bar on the first floor, and a further floor up there is
the restaurant.
The food appears to be cooked freshly to order judging by the time
my meal took to arrive. Well presented and the usual familiar items
on the menu.
No Kingfisher beer though.....
|

Central Chit Lom
"Food Loft" on
the 7th floor of Central Department Store in Chit Lom has a great
selection of international food, plus an Indian counter with an Indian
chef and a real tandoor.
Excellent food cooked to order. Slightly more
expensive than the usual food court food, but well worth a visit.
|

Komala's
Sukhumvit Soi 20 (look for the sign on the left, halfway down)
September 2002 saw the opening of this
fast food style operation from Singapore. Good menu of vegetarian
specialties and dishes you may have never seen before, very tasty. Everything is cooked specially
for you. Order from the cashier and hand your printed order to the staff
at the kitchen. Loads of staff, all eager to help. Not only good tasty
fresh food, also extremely cheap as well. Set lunch 125 Baht, for example.
Deliveries to your room as well.
Worth a visit for a giant dosa and some
aloo gobi, and to try things you may never have seen before.

Worth A Mention
Not really Indian
restaurants, but with Indian food |

Coco's Cafe
Inside Novotel Lotus Soi 33 Sukhumvit
The International buffet is on until
9pm, but then this restaurant is 100% Indian. A strange idea, but the
manager said he has to provide international food for the hotel guests. Easy to find up
Soi
33 Sukhumvit, Forget it on public holidays as well as Friday and
Saturday unless you book a table in advance.

Indian
Take-Away
Good quality and reasonably
priced Indian food is available from department store, The Emporium,
Sukhumvit Soi 24 and within Villa (super) Market, Sukhumvit Soi 33/1.
There are 2 outlets, run by The Novotel Lotus Hotel,
where you can buy various dishes to either eat on the premises (in the
food court) or take home in the plastic containers. The first outlet is
on the 5th floor in amongst the restaurants and food counters - look for
chef's hats on the staff. The second one is within the supermarket, or
as they call it, The Gourmet Market, also on the 5th floor. The Novotel counter,
in the supermarket, has a wider range of dishes to take
away. 50% off after 8pm!

Value Mart on Sukhumvit Soi 12, and in the Mini-Mart at the Rembrandt
Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 20 entrance. |
