As you can see, I haven't
got round to finishing this page yet! any help and suggestions welcome as I
now have my own apartment and I am no longer familiar with the hotel market. |
| Leaving aside guest houses
and the sort of accommodation frequented by back-packers, there are 2 basic
types of hotels on offer.
Family Hotels &
Cheap
Hotels
The main difference is that
family hotels cater to couples and those on package tours, and levy a charge
for "visitors" to your room who do not
check-in with you.
Cheap hotels are
easy-going and allow numerous visitors of all 3 sexes, as is your preference.
Often overlooked are
Serviced Apartments, which will
usually take bookings for a stay of 2 days or more. You get anything
from a studio apartment, usually bigger than a hotel room, or up to 4 or
more bedrooms, and usually for less than the price of a half decent
hotel. Come and go as you please with no restrictions on visitors, and
get maid service. I stayed in The Queens Park apartments, part of the
hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 22, for 30,000 Baht per month!
Look for the Adverts in the classified
sections of The Bangkok Post and The Nation, as well as on-line.
ADVICE - Aim to pay 50% of the
published price unless it's between December and the end of February. This
is the busy season, Christmas, New Year, and Chinese New Year. |

There are a group of hotels
used by Bangkok regulars that fall into the second category,
Cheap Hotels, all located in
easy walking distance of the main entertainment area of Sukhumvit Road. You
can take visitors to your room without question and without any extra
payment required. Ideal for the single traveller.
Business Inn
Sukhumvit Soi 11/1, cheap and cheerful with
clean rooms from 600 Baht per night. Good travel agent in the lobby and
rooms on both sides of the street. Good value and a great location, just by
Nana BTS Skytrain.
Grand Business Inn
Website
Almost on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 11
and easily seen from the main road, Grand Business Inn is newly opened in
late 2004 and slightly more expensive, but more lavishly decorated etc.
Dynasty Inn
The best hotel of this type in Bangkok!
Sukhumvit Soi 4, this hotel has a lot going
for it, I used to stay here for 3 months at a time. Decent rooms if you can
get one in the new block, but lookout for the ones with the joke bathroom.
Always very busy, so don't expect to walk in and get a room
without booking ahead.
Great staff,
cheap laundry, restaurant and coffee shop, and a hairdresser etc. This has
to be the best location for this type of hotel, just next to Nana Plaza and Nana BTS Skytrain. Expect to pay a little over 1000 Baht per night.
2006 saw the opening of their new hotel:-
Dynasty Inn Grande
Just a
little way away in Soi 6 (walk down Soi 4 and turn left). Everything is brand new, but so is the price,
about double the original hotel room rate AND they charge an extra 500 Baht
for a "guest"!
Honey Hotel
Sukhumvit Soi 19, a bit "long in the tooth"
but half reasonable if all you want is somewhere to sleep. Beware of the
rooms in the car park, I can't explain, you will have to see for yourself. The price is a bit variable depending on occupancy, expect to pay under 1000
Baht, certainly not over - unless you are desperate.
Premier Inn
Sukhumvit Soi 20, a bit basic but a good
location. The staff are a bit thick with barely adequate English. They usually
have rooms available, expect to pay around 800 - 1000 Baht.

Drop Inn
Newly opened in late 2003 this hotel is in
a very good location in a small lane just off the top of Sukhumvit Soi 20. I have checked out the rooms, and friends have stayed here with good
reports, I think it's a good choice. The room rate was quoted as 1400 Baht per night with breakfast. Website
